Rangers points deduction mooted after ‘sickening’ incident – ‘It would be mayhem’

Tam McManus has proposed a points deduction for inappropriate shouting following what happened during Rangers’ game against Hibernian on Sunday (10 March).

On Wednesday (13 March), the pundit wrote on the Daily Record website that the unprintable chanting from Gers fans towards Hibs forward Martin Boyle during the encounter at Easter Road was “terrible” and “sickening”.

Discussing the potential sanctions that could be imposed on clubs for their supporters’ behavior, McManus stated that docking points could be “the way forward,” but admitted that such a response would produce “mayhem.”

“Hibs’ statement acknowledges the problem in their own support,” McManus went on to say. “It’s about time more clubs did the same. Sunday appeared to be the final straw. The chants from Rangers fans towards Martin Boyle, which cannot be reported in this medium, were appalling. Sickening.

“Don’t believe this is aimed solely at the Rangers. Every club has a problem element. It is ubiquitous. Hibs have definitely had enough and do not want to put their players or fans through this again. They want supporters to feel comfortable when attending games. Is reducing allocations going to make a difference? Does it matter whether there are 3,500 or 1,500 people? The concern is that the chants are still present.

“The chanting, particularly from the Old Firm, is unacceptable, but how can you control it? Should we start fining clubs? That will make little impact to the top clubs unless large penalties are given down.

“Or do we go all out and start docking teams points? Perhaps it is the way forward, and the government will be responsible for policing it, but imagine the outrage. It would be chaotic. The basic truth is that this is a society issue, and it is on to individuals to recognise when they are out of order.”

No place in football for lewd chants after the Rangers incident.

It is definitely an issue throughout Scottish football, and it isn’t going to be an easy fix for the authorities to get to the bottom of after it’s gone on for so long.

There are many eyes on fan behaviour in Scotland right now, and there is also a debate about flares.

However, some of the chanting heard is totally disgusting and has no place in a sports stadium.

While they derive from deeper difficulties, there is no need for some things to be sung and football to be relegated to the sidelines.

It is extremely doubtful that points deductions will be implemented because it would be unfair to the teams or the average fan, but it is not an issue that will be forgotten anytime soon.
