This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs will have to say many tough goodbyes. And, after re-signing linebacker Drue Tranquill, all indicators lead to Willie Gay Jr.’s exit.

Gay’s four-year rookie contract for $5.2 million expired at the end of the season. According to Spotrac.com, he will get a four-year contract worth $28 million in free agency.

Gay, who has spent his whole career in Kansas City, is now ready to take on a larger defensive role. On Tuesday, March 12, one day after the NFL’s legal tampering period began, the 26-year-old begged supporters to do him a favor.

Gay wrote on X, “I never defend myself on social media lol, but I have to say to all fans, please don’t criticize my talent based on 20-25 plays in a game I played last year lol. Getting a feel for the game and momentum is crucial.”

Last season, Gay took part in 62% of snaps. While his overall Pro Football Focus score of 53.3 isn’t terrific, he received a 71.3 in run defense.

The Chiefs’ second-round choice in the 2020 NFL draft started 15 of 16 games in 2023. He has 58 total tackles, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 sack, 1 interception, and one forced fumble. In three playoff games, he had nine total tackles and one pass defense.

Gay received a lot of affection from Chiefs Kingdom after his plea. Arrowhead Live wrote, “Someone getting a dawg, wish you could run it in KC for one more year. A Chiefs supporter responded, “Willie, we know you’re an excellent football player.” One of the best. “We appreciate you.”
