Kansas City Chiefs Interested in Signing Chicago Bears Free Agent Wide Receiver Darnell Mooney
It appears that the Kansas City Chiefs are looking into the prospect of using free agency to strengthen their receiving corps.
The Chiefs are one of the clubs showing interest in Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who became a free
agent earlier this week, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Mooney, who is 26 years old, had 31 receptions for 414 yards and a score in the previous campaign. His best period
coordinator, Matt Nagy, a former head coach of the Bears. Reuniting with Nagy might spark the same kind of
chemistry that worked well for Mooney throughout his four-year stint.
Now that his first four-year, $3.56 million rookie deal is over, Mooney may finally enjoy unrestricted free agency.
Notably, prior to the 2023 season, he declined a three-year deal with the Bears.
Mooney hasn’t produced much yardage in his previous seasons—he had fewer than 500 receiving yards in 2022 and
2023—but he has shown flashes of promise and potential, especially when
teamed with a quarterback of Patrick Mahomes’ level.
While the Chiefs achieved considerable success in 2023, clinching their second consecutive Super Bowl victory,
concerns lingered over the performance of their wide receiver group throughout the regular season. Instances of
dropped passes and errors were recurrent, prompting doubts about the team’s ability to secure another championship.
Mahomes and the Chiefs successfully handled the difficulties presented by their receiving corps. However, adding a
talented receiver such as Mooney to the roster would strengthen it and even
open the door for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl victory.
