Sports update:€3m+ add-ons sunderland offer for loan striker accepted by celtic.
Sunderland has been mooted as a possible summer transfer destination for Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.
The school product has struggled to create a consistent impact for the Hoops.
However, he has made 92 appearances for the Premier League team where he started his career.
As minutes seemed to be limited under Brendan Rodgers,
In January, he signed on loan with West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship.
He’ll be at the Hawthorns until the end of the season, but Baggies supporters are already hoping he stays.
He has impressed with six goals in nine outings, raising doubts about what comes next.
According to commentator Carlton Palmer, Celtic could demand up to £3 million for Johnston.
Sunderland is an obvious choice, although Norwich City has also been discussed.
Former England and West Brom midfielder tells Football League World:
“Mikey Johnston has kept up his flying time at West Brom since signing on loan in the January transfer window.
He scored his sixth goal for West Bromwich Albion in their most recent win over Huddersfield Town.
“He’s enjoying a terrific time since joining Celtic on loan. Yes, a lot of clubs will take note of the way he plays,
So you will be looking at clubs that will be looking at players moving on, such as Jack Clarke and [Jon] Rowe.
People will be looking at Mikey Johnston as a potential successor.
“But he’s having a terrific time at West Brom and loves playing football there.
He still has a contract with his parent club, Celtic, and there is no price written into it.
So it’s unclear whether West Brom will be able to finance him now that the new owners are in place.
“However, given his great performance for West Bromwich Albion and Norwich,
Sunderland and other potential Championship clubs will definitely monitor the situation.
Sunderland’s ambition is to buy young players at a low cost.
I don’t think Johnston will fall into that category, as I feel Celtic will be seeking for at least £2 million or £3 million based on his Championship performance.
“So, whether Sunderland have the money to pay that, Norwich have the money to pay for Mikey Johnston.
