The one person who was crucial to the Milwaukee Bucks-Boston Celtics trade is revealed by Jrue Holiday.
In theory, Jrue Holiday was not traded by the Milwaukee Bucks to the Boston Celtics. It would have been a grave transgression. Nevertheless, that is still how things transpired, with the Portland Trail Blazers and Boston ultimately coming to an agreement to transfer the two-time All-Star to Bean Town.
It turns out that Holiday’s move to Boston was greatly aided by Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. Now that he’s come up, Holiday has expressed gratitude to his former coach for four days as well as how this all came to be.
After securing his position as a crucial member of the Celtics and their chances of winning the championship this year, Holiday took a look back at the agreement that made it all possible. The 33-year-old is incredibly appreciative to Billups for watching out for him during the whole trade procedure:
“It meant a lot,” Holiday told Jay King of The Athletic. “Being able to see a coach that has my best interests (in mind). And you could see it and you could hear it, which a lot of times maybe some players don’t get a chance to see that from a coach. So he definitely had my best interest (at heart) from the beginning. And he just always looked out for me.”
In the end, Holiday might have been compelled to play in Portland by Billups and the Blazers. Ultimately, they required a replacement point guard because they had recently lost Damian Lillard. But Billups understood that Holiday would be better served by a club capable of contending for a title at this stage of his career.
