What Aston Villa paid for Zaniolo and his wage
Nicolo Zaniolo moved from Roma to Galatasaray a little over a year ago today in an effort to start a new chapter in his career.
The Italian midfielder joined to Villa on a season-long loan in the summer after scoring five goals in just ten games, including two starts, in the Turkish Super Lig.
The BBC reports that the Villans paid a £4.25 million loan fee for the provisional signing of the “fantastic” Zaniolo, according to scout Jacek Kulig. However, if certain requirements are fulfilled, the agreement may become a permanent one worth £19.2 million.
The 24-year-old’s salary will cost NSWE £60k a week for the season, or £3.1 million. But according to Capology, Zaniolo has already received bonuses totaling little less than £800k.
What Zaniolo earns compared to Villa’s midfielders
Though Zaniolo’s time in England hasn’t exactly been ideal, he was initially signed to replace Emi Buendia, who is expected to miss nearly the whole season due to an ACL injury.
Despite playing in 19 Premier League games this season, the former Roma prospect has only started seven of them and scored once, in the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United.
With two goals in all competitions, the attacking midfielder Zaniolo is expected to cost Villa £4 million for each goal he scores for the team when you factor in his pay, bonuses, and loan fee.
Thankfully, he doesn’t make as much money as some of the Villa team’s top earners—£90k less than Youri Tielemans and £15k less than Douglas Luiz each week.

But since coming to Villa Park, Zaniolo has had more yellow cards than goal contributions, so his salary hasn’t exactly been justified on the field.
Aside from his production in the closing third, the former Inter Milan star has also had difficulty contributing to the team, managing only 5.3 accurate passes, 0.4 crucial passes, and 1.1 shoots per game.
Given that Emery doesn’t think the Italian can consistently start in the starting lineup, it’s safe to assume that his loan move to Villa was a flop.
But Zaniolo might be given a chance to replace the suspended McGinn, and it might be the catalyst for a new chapter in his Villa career.
