Derby County set to see third bid accepted for Max Johnston despite interest from Greek giants

Derby County are continuing to press on with their transfer business this summer after they were beaten 3-1 by Stoke City in their opening game of the season.

Carlton Morris, who left Luton Town in July, scored his first goal for the Rams to hand his new side the lead at the bet365 Stadium on the hour mark. However, this lead would last just 10 minutes before Lewis Baker struck home to equalise.

John Eustace must sign two more wingers as his team lacked creativity in Staffordshire on Saturday, and they were made to pay as Divin Mubama and Sorba Thomas found the back of the net late to hand Stoke all three points.

Nevertheless, Derby are very much a work in progress with players still coming back to full fitness, while there are still plenty of signings to be made and they are going all out to secure a new full-back.

Derby County prepare to make third bid for Max Johnston

Austrian side Sturm Graz have already rejected two bids from the Rams for Max Johnston, but Eustace is not ready to give up his pursuit of the right-back just yet.

According to Anthony Joseph, Derby are preparing to make a third bid for the Scotland international, with £1.4m and £1.6m approaches already being turned down.

However, Greek giants Panathinaikos are also interested in the defender and are keeping a close eye on the situation that is unfolding between the Championship outfit and the Austrian champions.

Johnston did not feature against Strasbourg in a friendly on Wednesday, while Derby did struggle on the right side of defence against Stoke.

Max Johnston joining could see Kane Wilson move into a more advanced position

The Rams do have three different options who can play at right-back currently, but it was Ryan Nyambe who took on the responsibility of that area of the pitch on Saturday.

However, he struggled to get into the match and the attacking side of his game does not often shine through, with the Namibia international having never scored a senior goal.

Yet, with the potential signing of Johnston, Derby would have a defender who can do both the attacking and defensive side of the game. This could also give Eustace the option of playing Wilson in a slightly more advanced role on the wing.

Joe Ward could also play as a winger if needed, but it is vital that the Rams do sign a winger or two before the transfer window shuts.
