Wrexham drop huge hint Paul Mullin will never play for club again with decision before Southampton

Paul Mullin enjoyed four memorable years with Wrexham, but now their 2025/26 campaign is underway, they have made a big call relating to the striker.

Wrexham’s first campaign in the second tier of English football for 43 years took place on Saturday.

The Red Dragons faced off with Will Still’s Southampton, who will be looking to secure a swift return to the Premier League this season.

Wrexham were predicted to lose the tie, and the line-up announced ahead of the game caused fans concern.

Despite it being thought that he was only signed as a back-up option, Danny Ward started versus Southampton in place of Arthur Okonkwo.

Wrexham hand Josh Windass Paul Mullin shirt number

Ryan Barnett featuring over Ryan Longman and James McClean being on the bench was also interesting.

But there was another big takeaway from the Wrexham squad that faced off with Southampton.

The Dragons confirmed their team sheet just over an hour before kick-off.

The shirt numbers for each player starting were included, with new striker Kieffer Moore handed the number 19.

Surprisingly, Josh Windass, who was previously listed as number 17 on the club’s website, has taken Paul Mullin’s shirt number.

Mullin has been no.10 since he signed for the club on a free transfer back in the summer of 2021.

He has moved to Wigan Athletic on loan this season, but will still have another year left on his contract after 2025/26.

So, if the club are willing to give away his long-time number, it could suggest there are no plans for him to return in 2026.

Wrexham number 9 could be up for grabs soon

10 is a coveted shirt number, which Windass has managed to earn himself after leaving Sheffield Wednesday.

But Wrexham could have a new nine in the near future as well.

It comes after Parkinson confirmed this week that Ollie Palmer will be leaving before the deadline on September 1.

Whether or not his number nine is given to someone else this summer remains to be seen.
