FOOTBALL NEWS: Clive Mendonca Offers Three Key Pieces of Advice to His Club Ahead of Championship Return

June 9, 2025 — The Valley, London

As Charlton Athletic gear up for their long-awaited return to the Sky Bet Championship, club legend Clive Mendonca has spoken out with a message of support — and a few words of wisdom — for the club he still holds close to his heart.

Mendonca, forever remembered for his iconic hat-trick in the 1998 First Division play-off final at Wembley, says he’s “immensely proud” of Charlton’s promotion and hopes they can build on the momentum going into one of the toughest leagues in world football.

🔴 “This league doesn’t forgive mistakes,” Mendonca said in an exclusive interview. “But I believe this team has what it takes to compete — with the right mindset and the right backing.”

He offered three key pieces of advice to the club:

✅ 1. Recruit Smart, Not Flashy

“The Championship is a different beast. You need depth, resilience, and character more than just big names. Go after players who are hungry and fit the manager’s vision — not just those with a fancy CV.”

Mendonca believes building a balanced and unified squad is more important than chasing high-profile signings.

✅ 2. Turn The Valley Into a Fortress

“When I played, we made teams uncomfortable at The Valley. That connection with the fans — the noise, the belief — it mattered. Make every home game count. Let teams fear coming here again.”

He urged both players and fans to create an intimidating atmosphere and make home form the foundation of their survival and success.

✅ 3. Back the Manager – Even Through Dips

“There’ll be rough patches, no doubt. It’s the nature of the Championship. But the club needs to stay patient and trust the project. Don’t panic. Stick together.”

Mendonca warned against short-term thinking and constant changes at the top — something that has plagued the club in recent years.

❤️ “I’ll always be an Addick,” Mendonca added. “And I believe we’re on the right track. Let’s build something special again — step by step.”

Charlton will begin pre-season training later this month, with several transfer targets already lined up as the club prepares for a competitive 2025/26 campaign.
