🧤 Newcastle United Agree £3m Deal with Derby County for Goalkeeper as Backup Option

Newcastle, June 7, 2025 — Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Derby County to sign goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith in a deal worth £3 million, sources close to both clubs have confirmed.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper, who played a pivotal role in Derby’s promotion push last season, is set to move to St. James’ Park as a reliable backup option behind current first-choice keeper Nick Pope.

With Martin Dúbravka expected to leave the club this summer, the Magpies have acted quickly to bolster their goalkeeping ranks ahead of a busy 2025/26 campaign that includes European fixtures.

Wildsmith is expected to undergo a medical on Tyneside early next week before finalizing personal terms.

The move marks a return to the Premier League for the former Sheffield Wednesday man, who has earned plaudits in recent years for his sharp reflexes and leadership in the Championship.

“Joe is a proven professional with bags of experience and the right mentality,” a Newcastle insider said.

“He understands his role and will be a fantastic addition to the squad both on and off the pitch.”

Derby County are believed to be already lining up replacements, with young keeper Josh Vickers expected to step up as the club’s new No. 1.

An official announcement from both clubs is expected in the coming days.
