Charlton Complete £1.4m Plus Add-Ons Deal for Derby County Left-Back on Five-Year Contract
London, June 5, 2025 — Charlton Athletic have officially completed the signing of Derby County left-back Liam Thompson in a deal worth £1.4 million plus add-ons. The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract, tying him to the club until the summer of 2030.
The deal includes additional clauses based on performance and team success, including promotion bonuses, appearance milestones, and international call-ups, which could see the total package rise to around £2 million.
Thompson, a standout performer in Derby’s backline last season, made 38 appearances and was widely regarded as one of the most consistent left-backs in League One. His attacking intent and defensive discipline caught the eye of Charlton scouts early in the campaign.
Speaking to CharltonTV after completing his medical, Thompson said:
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family. Charlton is a massive club with big ambitions, and the project here really excites me. I’m ready to work hard and help push for promotion.”
Charlton manager Nathan Jones praised the club’s recruitment team for getting the deal over the line:
“Liam is exactly the profile of player we want to build around — young, hungry, and technically strong. We believe he’s got the potential to develop into one of the best full-backs outside the top tier, and we’re delighted he’s committed to a long-term future here.”
Thompson is expected to join up with the squad for pre-season later this month and could feature in Charlton’s upcoming tour of Spain in July.
The move represents Charlton’s first major signing of the summer window, with more arrivals expected in the coming weeks as the club aims to strengthen ahead of a promotion push in the 2025/26 season.
