Birmingham City release ‘world class’ statement after £2.4bn Sports Quarter announcement

Jeremy Dale says Birmingham City’s plans for a new stadium and the regeneration of the east of the city can now go ‘to the next level’.

Dale, Blues’ interim CEO, has welcomed confirmation the Government will provide £2.4billion worth of funding to the West Midlands, with £300m to £400m set aside for the creation of a tram-link from the city centre to Blues’ proposed ground on the existing Wheels site.

Knighthead have been hoovering up land around the area to build not just a 62,000-seater stadium but an entire Sports Quarter which it is hoped will transform the landscape and economy in that part of the city.

In a statement on the club’s website, Dale said Blues fans can expect a ‘world class’ ground.

“ Birmingham City Football Club has a long heritage of contributing to our local community. The investment confirmed today by Richard Parker will allow us to take this to the next level – creating jobs, building infrastructure for our local community, and creating a world-class sporting venue that will put Birmingham on the map.”

The statement read: “Knighthead Capital Management, LLC, on behalf of certain of its affiliates (“Knighthead”) welcomes the West Midlands Mayor’s confirmation that the Chancellor’s multi-billion-pound investment in the region’s transport infrastructure will support the vital metro extension to Birmingham’s Sports Quarter.
