Duncan Ferguson shares the fascinating conversation he had with Farhad Moshiri before Everton sacked Marco Silva

Everton sacked Marco Silva in December 2019 after a bruising 5-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Marco Silva lasted just 18 months in charge and left the club in the relegation zone, however, there has been an acceptance in the years after that he wasn’t given enough time.

The Portuguese head coach has since established himself as one of the best in the Premier League, having helped Fulham gain promotion before cementing them as a top 10 side.

The Cottagers currently reside in 10th place and could yet sneak into ninth on the final day of the season, as they take on Manchester City at home.

Some Everton fans wanted Silva back at Goodison Park earlier this year, which shows how well-liked he remains.

Duncan Ferguson has now shared the conversation he had with Everton’s board before they decided to sack him.

Duncan Ferguson urged Everton’s board to keep Marco Silva before he was sacked

Former Everton striker and coach Duncan Ferguson sat down with Gary Lineker this week and reflected on some of his memories at the club.

The topic of Marco Silva was brought up, and Ferguson revealed that he actually urged Farhad Moshiri not to sack him following the heavy defeat against Liverpool.

“I told him to keep Marco,” the 53-year-old explained. “I told him to keep him.

“I told him to keep him and they’ll tell you that, the board of directors will tell you that, that’s when they were talking about getting rid of him, and I was there at the time thinking I was losing my job, and when they realized I wasn’t losing my job, I said to them, look, whatever, I said, you need to keep Marco for Saturday.

“You’ve got to give him another go, because we’d just been beaten off at Liverpool, we got battered, it was humiliation. I think it was the biggest defeat in the Derby history.

“And we had Chelsea who were flying, under Frank Lampard, had only been beat for 15 games or something. And I said, give him another go. But they’d made their mind up.”

Silva could leave Fulham at the end of the season

Silva’s tenure at Fulham could be coming to an end, with some reports suggesting he’s set to make the switch to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

Silva has agreed to join Al-Hilal, however, that will only materialise if they fail to land their first-choice managerial target.

Silva has also been linked with the Tottenham Hotspur job, although that may be off the table after Ange Postecoglou beat Manchester United to win the Europa League last night.

Anyhow, with all that said, Ferguson was certainly right to ask Moshiri to give him more time, but football moves on and now David Moyes is at the helm, doing a fantastic job.
