Aston Villa confirm player departure after being singled out at awards evening
Aston Villa have confirmed that Robin Olsen will be leaving the club this summer.
The 35-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of next month, and according to Sportbladet, Swedish champions Malmö have agreed terms with Olsen, which would see him rejoin the club where he began his career.
Before moving abroad in 2015, Olsen won two Swedish championships and a domestic cup title with Malmö.
Following spells at PAOK, Copenhagen, Roma, Cagliari, Everton, and Sheffield United, Olsen joined Villa on loan in 2022 under then-manager Steven Gerrard. The move was made permanent the following summer.
This season, Villa have called on Olsen in three Premier League matches. He came on at half-time against both Chelsea and Crystal Palace after Emi Martínez sustained injuries, and he started in Villa’s 1-0 win over Brentford in March.
At the club’s awards ceremony at Villa Park on Wednesday evening, Olsen was awarded a silver plate, with “In recognition of services to Aston Villa Football Club” engraved on it.
Earlier this year, Unai Emery said: “With Robin Olsen, I respect him – before, now, and for his future – as a really amazing man and professional.
“The respect for him in the dressing room, from the players and myself as a coach, is massive. He is a fantastic guy. He always helps us when we need him, and he’s always positive with his teammates.
“He’s an example in every way, and the message he constantly sends in the dressing room is to think of others, not be selfish.
“He is a really great, great man – a great, great man and a great, great goalkeeper.”
