Alfie May’s Final Mission! Chris Davies Declares: ‘This Is Why We Brought Him In!

Alfie May has all but given up on retaining the League One Golden Boot and Birmingham City’s reinvented number nine wants assists on the final day at Cambridge.

May netted his 15th league goal against Blackpool on Wednesday – 16th if you count the goal May has been awarded that Ben Davies scored versus Barnsley – to help Blues break the EFL points record.

The 31-year-old has fallen short of his pre-season target of a fourth straight 20-goal season and the Golden Boot looks set to go to Leyton Orient’s Charlie Kelman or Blues teammate Jay Stansfield.

However, with eight assists in the league, May has set up more goals this season than any other year in his career. He was close to adding a ninth against Blackpool with a cute outside-of-the-foot pass that Stansfield couldn’t quite stab home.

May wants to reach double figures for assists at The Abbey Stadium today.

“The gaffer says about being flexible with running in behind but I like to come towards the ball. It’s created something different,” says May.

“I played a lot at 10 for Charlton last year but in this team, me playing as a nine drifting into 10 areas is better for myself so I can work away from defenders.

“When I look at it, I still want 10 assists. I’m probably not as happy with my goals, I wanted more – every striker is greedy and wants more – but what we’ve achieved as a team has been fantastic.”

May is the only outfield player with 100 percent availability this season. The striker hasn’t been injured, ill or suspended and has featured in 57 of the club’s 59 games to date – no player has made more appearances.
