Black bags, tires, and beds were among the trash heaps on street corners.

Residents who are fed up have called their Huddersfield suburb a “dump” and claim that fly-tipping and rodents are

frequent occurrences.

Fly-tipping has rarely been so ‘blatant’, according to law-abiding residents in the Hillhouse and Fartown region, who

have appealed for action before it worsens. According to Neil Platts, 47, who has lived in the region for a long time,

the issues of dog poop and litter seem to be becoming worse.

He said: “It’s never been this bad with the litter and dog mess.” He likened the Fartown neighbourhood to the

children’s book Stig of the Dump.

After moving in and out of apartments, Neil thinks that locals, not visitors, are dropping trash on street corners. “It’s

that blatant – people don’t care,” he said.

He claimed that while the neighbourhood around Hillhouse and Fartown was beautiful in the summer, the littering

became more obvious in the winter.

It’s awful. I feel as though I’m living there, like Stig of the Dump.

One woman, who lives just off Bradford Road at Hillhouse, said: “It’s a mess with all the dumped bin bags. It’s

disgusting. It’s causing rats. You can see the rat holes in the grass.”

One man declared: “It’s repulsive. Due to the lack of cars, I believe the council should occasionally place a skip in the

area.
This week’s Monday saw heaps of trash on both sides of Bradford Road, including tires and mattresses abandoned

close to a bus stop. A stack of bin bags containing trash and some abandoned home goods was located on the

opposite side of the road. Although they were unable to determine the precise duration, the residents indicated that

the trash had been there for a considerable amount of time.

The local government has declared that fly-tipping would not be allowed and that violators will face legal action.

Kirklees issued the warning this week following the discovery of two persons unlawfully disposing of garbage.

Between October and November 2024, three distinct fly-tipping incidents involving a Peugeot Bipper van were

captured by CCTV cameras that Kirklees Council had installed on Grange Road in Batley.

“I hope this prosecution sends a clear message that Kirklees Council will not tolerate individuals fly-tipping in our

borough,” said Councillor Munir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways, in response to the

prosecutions.

“Our Greenspace Action Team’s mission is to identify and prosecute those who do harm to our towns and

communities by improperly disposing of trash. This not only looks terrible, but it is also detrimental to wildlife and

the environment.

“We’re determined to address this issue, and we ask residents to help us by only using registered waste carriers,

applying for a Waste Transfer Certificate, disposing of waste legally at our Household Waste Recycling Centres, and

reporting fly-tipping via our special webpage.”
