Jamie Carragher picks Nottingham Forest star as PL signing of the season, Marinakis hit the jackpot
Nottingham Forest have been bashed for their recruitment in recent times but thankfully, that’s now becoming a thing of the past.
The Reds had to learn the error of their ways in difficult fashion. After promotion to the Premier League, Evangelos Marinakis bankrolled 30 new players spread across two transfer windows and was subsequently hit with a four-point deduction last season.
The decision made by the independent committee working on behalf of the Premier League has proved a blessing in disguise. Forest have become savvy operators when it comes to transfers and signed just nine players in the summer, with quality over quantity the order of the day.
The Reds lost 1-0 to Everton on Saturday and will relinquish their third-place standing for the first time in nearly four months if Newcastle win their game in hand against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Jamie Carragher lauds Forest star Nikola Milenkovic
It’s getting towards the stage of the season where pundits start to pick their best performers of the campaign and Forest enforcer Milenkovic is going to be the name picked by plenty.
Carragher was asked who he thought the signing of the season was for the 2024/25 campaign, and without hesitation, he picked out Milenkovic, who checked in from Fiorentina for an astonishing £12 million.
It’s quite remarkable and very difficult to fathom how Forest managed to pull off such a coup. At £12 million, Carragher is right to name him the signing of the season given how much he’s transformed Forest on the pitch this season.
Sadly, Milenkovic was unable to prevent Forest from defeat against Everton. However, the Reds have been in much improved form defensively, particularly from set pieces, where the Serbian has been a huge help.
Nikola Milenkovic stats 2024/25
The former Fiorentina captain led La Viola to back-to-back Europa Conference League finals but was unable to help the team get over the line and win the trophy on either occasion.
Last season, Milenkovic was part of the team that lost to Olympiacos in the final and ultimately, he must have impressed Marinakis during that game with the Forest owner choosing to bring him to England.
At 27-years-old, Milenkovic is at the perfect age. He’s at the peak of his powers and he could star in the Forest back line for a number of years from this point, given his performances across this season.
It’s great to see that Forest are getting some recognition for their impressive season. Now, Milenkovic will hope to call upon his big-game experience and help the Reds end a memorable campaign in style.
