“The Formation Fix That Saved Milan – And No One Noticed”

“The Formation Fix That Saved Milan – And No One Noticed”

For the first time in a long time, AC Milan looked dominant on Friday night, and their 4-0 victory is evidence of that.

But, it must now be improved. While scoring four goals is always a good thing, there are also good questions to ask when maintaining a clean sheet.

For Sergio Conceicao, the majority of them have been, so why wasn’t this tried earlier? According to Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), this was the first chance to alter the system, at least practically.

The Portuguese coach has been considering switching up the lineup since before the international break, moving away from Milan’s nearly constant 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 configuration over the past several years.

The plan was to test the team against Napoli, but everything was put on hold until now. The ball started rolling before the international break. It was more about working with the system—constantly learning its ins and outs—than it was about doing a video analysis.

In Udine, the side were certainly much more tight, albeit there was also more flexibility on offer to those who required it – Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, for example, which the Portuguese talked about post-game.

There are still problems with this team, of course, but the 3-4-3 “masks” them, even though it appears to have more weaknesses on paper.

With challenging games coming up, there is now hope for what can be accomplished in the coming weeks with this new system, but there is also a lingering feeling of what if, what if Conceicao had come in the summer and had been given the time and fresh start to work out his side?
