Unai Emery makes stance clear on Marco Asensio after missed penalties vs Southampton
Unai Emery had no issue with Marco Asensio taking a second penalty in Aston Villa’s win over Southampton, despite seeing his first effort saved by Aaron Ramsdale.
After John McGinn was fouled in the box, Asensio stepped up again but was denied once more by Ramsdale. Fortunately for Villa, McGinn converted the rebound.
Ollie Watkins, who had won the first penalty, opened the scoring shortly after Asensio’s initial miss.
Donyell Malen doubled Villa’s lead in the 79th minute, and McGinn made it 3-0 in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time.
It simply wasn’t Asensio’s day, as he became only the fourth player in Premier League history to miss two penalties in a single match.
Asked if he was annoyed that Asensio stepped up for a second time, Emey said: “I think it is normal that his challenge is to get the second one after the first one. It is clear which penalty shooter is first.”
He added: “We have our penalty shooter and the first one is Marcus Rashford. The second one is Asensio. Third ones are Tielemans, McGinn and Watkins.
“They are responsible when penalties are coming. We have to accept it and decide for the next match.”
