Sunderland received an injury boost when a player who played for the first team this season was selected for the U21 starting lineup.
The Sunderland U21s’ starting lineup for tonight includes Trey Ogunsuyi.
Trey Ogunsuyi, a teenage striker, has returned from injury and is included in Sunderland U21s’
starting lineup for their Premier League 2 match against Aston Villa on Friday night.
The young player has excelled for Graeme Murty’s team this season, and Regis Le Bris has recognized
his performances at the youth level by including him in the first team matchday roster on multiple occasions.
Trey Ogunsuyi’s return from injury is in line with the schedule set out by U21s head coach Murty,
who hinted last week that the center-forward might be an option for his team’s final Premier League
2 match of the season against Villa. In fact, Ogunsuyi made his senior debut in January’s
FA Cup third round loss to Stoke City, coming on from the bench for a nine-minute cameo.
However, his absence from the first team and the U21s in recent weeks has been due to a fitness issue.
He stated at the time: “We might receive them on Friday, but we’ll be guided by medical advice and
make sure we challenge them appropriately.” It’s unfortunate that the young athletes have had to
miss out on game time due to a number of injuries that have been incapacitating to them,
but as with everything, it gives someone else a chance, so we just need to make sure that we support those
young players and get them what they need. If they need to return and play some minutes, they will,
and if they need to take a little more time off, we’ll make sure that we do that too.
