The new position Wolves will prioritise this summer with £10m star now ‘keen’ to leave Molineux
Wolves will be having a busy summer – and it seems one position has become a ‘priority’ for the club ahead of the transfer window.
Wolves have had a very rocky season in 2024/25 and are languishing in 17th.
But recently there has been new optimism at Molineux, with Vitor Pereira having come in and saved Wolves’ bacon.
Wolves are not mathematically safe from relegation yet.
But there is a very slim chance that Wolves will go down now after beating Ipswich Town to open up a 12-point gap.
And that means focus can now be placed on the summer.
And today, there is word about one position Wolves will prioritise.
Wolves to target a new goalkeeper with Sam Johnstone ‘keen’ to leave
The Telegraph have reported about Wolves’ plans for the summer, and apparently the club will make the goalkeeper position a ‘priority’ this summer.
Sam Johnstone is said to be ‘keen’ to leave the club this summer, having failed to oust Jose Sa as the number one at Molineux.
Johnstone arrived last summer in a £10 million deal from Crystal Palace, and most thought that would mean Sa would leave the club.
He had interest from Saudi Arabia, but nothing materialised in the end.
Johnstone played a handful of games but failed to impress, before Sa reclaimed his starting berth. And since Pereira came in, the Portuguese has been his go-to pick between the sticks.
Johnstone – who Pereira did say was ‘competing well’ recently – is now said to be ready to move on and become a number one again.
Johnstone signing was a big oversight by Wolves
There have been some poor signings made by the club in recent times.
But the Johnstone one was perplexing, especially as it came at a time when Wolves really needed to bring in a new centre-back after Maximilian Kilman left.
£10 million (BBC Sport) was a lot to pay, and that brought about pressure for Johnstone to deliver.
But he didn’t do that, with data showing Johnstone has kept just one clean sheet in 10 appearances.
Eventually Sa re-established himself as the number one. To his credit he reacted well to the arrival of Johnstone.
Now it looks like he could move on after just one season, which would underline what a mistake it was to sign him.
