Breaking: Aston Villa strike deal for promising striker

Aston Villa have confirmed Rory Wilson has signed a new contract with the club.

Discussions over a new deal had stalled earlier in the season after Villa made a number of long-term contract proposals to the Scotland youth international.

Wilson’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer, but after the winter window closed, there was a willingness from all parties to agree fresh terms.

The length of contract and promises over first-team involvement were previously stumbling blocks, but Villa have worked to find a solution.

Monchi and Damian Vidagany were involved in talks, with Villa committing to a significant outlay to secure the 19-year-old’s future on a deal shorter than originally proposed.

It is understood that Wilson received as many as nine concrete pre-contract offers after entering the final months of his deal in the New Year.

He joined from Rangers in the summer of 2022 and is regarded as one of the club’s most promising youngsters, bagging 51 goals at youth level for the Scottish giants before his move south of the border.

Wilson then scored 15 goals for Villa’s under-18s and under-21s in 2022/23, before netting another 19 last term.

He has been injured in recent months, which has limited his game time in this campaign, though the forward has still scored twice in four appearances.

If Villa had failed to pin Wilson down to a new contract and he left to join a foreign club, they would have received a small compensation payment – €270,000 if a foreign category one academy club signed him, paid in three instalments of €90,000, or just €160,000 if a category two academy club took him.

Aston Villa is marking its 150th anniversary with the launch of a new merch collection including shirts, hoodies, books, mugs and scarves.

Top items include the Anniversary Shirt, Anniversary Hoodie and Anniversary Polo Shirt, plus the 150 Years picture books Volume One and Volume Two.
