Morgan Rogers explains what happened with Morata during Aston Villa’s win over Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest were beaten by Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park as the hosts flexed their own Champions League credentials.
The Reds were awful in the opening 15 minutes of this contest and paid the ultimate price for their slow start.
Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malan were given the freedom of Birmingham to give Forest an uphill task in the opening exchanges, with Nuno Espirito Santo counting the cost of several injured stars.
Alan Smith felt Espirito Santo’s decision before the game backfired but the defending on show in the first half was pretty inexcusable given how brilliant the team have been in that aspect this season.
Morgan Rogers makes Morato claim after win over Forest
The England international has been in fine form this season and his career is growing with each passing season at the moment.
Rogers made his first start for England last month – and given the quality he showcased on Saturday, that isn’t a surprise.
He took advantage of some average defending from Morato and now, he’s shared what he noticed about the Forest defender.
He told Sky Sports: “I saw Morato not looking and once Youri Tielemans got the ball, I had to make the move. He has the quality to pick me out from anywhere. I knew I had to make sure the first touch was right to get the opportunity. It fell perfectly and I am happy to put it away. You can hear the crowd when the ball was coming over the top, so I had to be calm and composed.”
Morato must learn from Villa debacle
In Portugal, turning out for Benfica, you could probably get away with sorting your kit out mid-game but not in the Premier League.
It’s quite unforgivable for Morato to switch off in that manner with a player like Rogers waiting to open the scoring and it simply won’t do.
Morato has been good this season, but this mistake means that he owes his teammates big time after today and he must now make amends.
Now isn’t the time for Forest to start digging people out though and it’s now a seven-game season that could lead to the Reds playing in the Champions League next season.
