Under fire Leeds United star rejected ‘bigger wages’ to stay put at Elland Road – He is not even one of the top earners

Leeds United are under pressure after winning just one of their last five league games. The Whites need a win at Luton Town to avoid another implosion at the business end of the season. Several Leeds stars are under fire for their poor performances, but one of them could have accepted a bigger offer to move on from Elland Road recently.

Daniel Farke and his Leeds United stars are under fire after a poor run of form is threatening to end their hopes of earning automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds are desperate for three points soon, and will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to Kenilworth Road to take on Luton Town on Saturday.

A few Leeds stars have been in poor form, and one of them could have easily left Elland Road last summer when he was offered bigger wages to agree to a transfer to Italy.

Everyone wants him off the team, but he rejected big money to stay at Leeds United

Illan Meslier is fighting for his Leeds career, and Farke is under real pressure to drop a goalkeeper whom he has backed despite several errors in the past.

The Frenchman has attracted all the criticism for dropping one more clanger, and many are insisting Leeds would have been celebrating promotion by now if they had a better goalkeeper.

Meslier could have avoided all this negativity around him had he decided to move on from Leeds following their failure to get promoted last season.

According to TEAMTalk, Fiorentina and Genoa were seriously interested in getting their hands on the Leeds goalkeeper last summer.

They even offered him bigger wages than he is currently on at Leeds, but the Frenchman decided to stay put at Elland Road.

It is easy to agree that Meslier has done more reputational damage this season, and Leeds are almost certain to replace him in the next transfer window.

Meslier’s wages are not the biggest

Leeds have brought down the salary bill, but the Frenchman is not even one of the highest earners in the Whites’ squad at this stage.

Patrick Bamford is the highest earner with a contract worth £70,000 per week; Meslier doesn’t even earn half that figure.

The Leeds goalkeeper is on a contract worth £30,000 per week, on par with Jayden Bogle, Wilfried Gnonto, and his potential replacement against Luton, Karl Darlow.

His wages mean, Leeds are unlikely to find it hard to attract suitors for him in the summer if they are prepared to move him on in favour of a new goalkeeper.
