Wolves strike contract agreement with £6.7m defender following Aston Villa setback

Wolves have secured the future of a promising centre-back.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed central defender Yerson Mosquera has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.

The Old Gold see Mosquera, who played the first five Premier League matches of the season before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee against Aston Villa, as a key player for the future.

Mosquera’s significant setback at Villa Park in September has kept him out for over six months so far and he will remain sidelined for the rest of the current campaign. He’s expected to return in the summer, though, and could have an involvement at the start of 2025/26, when Wolves will hopefully still be in the Premier League.

The new deal sees Mosquera ditch his original contract end date of June 2026 for the much-extended June 2030, while the club holds the option for a further year. The Colombia international, currently valued at £6.7 million by Transfermarkt, is determined to succeed at Wolves and agrees he can become an important member of the squad.

“I’m really happy to stay with Wolves,” Mosquera said: “It’s a really good opportunity because I need to get back and I have another chance to play here.

“It was an easy decision for me, because from the first time I spoke with them, I wanted to stay here. I wanted to renew my contract because I want to play for Wolves.

“Now, I need to stay focused, I need to be careful, because my injury was really big, but now I feel confident. I feel really good and I’ll take my time to be back.

“I’m very appreciative of the club, because they’re giving me another opportunity. I know it’s not easy to do this in my situation, but they believe in me, that is the most important thing.

“I will be back stronger, for sure, I promise the Wolves supporters, the club, and I will give 100 per cent when I’m back.”

Vitor Pereira delighted to secure defender’s services

When he arrived at Molineux, head coach Vitor Pereira had very few central defensive options, a weakness that previous boss Gary O’Neil complained about regularly. That’s far from ideal in any team, let alone one that plays best when operating in a back three.

Pereira was able to lure Emmanuel Agbadou from Reims in the winter as the Ivorian signed for a £16.6 million fee, while Nasser Djiga arrived from Red Star Belgrade for around £10 million. Only Agbadou has been ready to make an immediate impact, however, with Djiga yet to settle. This has meant playing Matt Doherty in an auxiliary right centre-back role.

Pereira is excited to add Mosquera to his options and believes he has the characteristics to thrive in his tactical structure. “Yerson has the profile in a central defender that I like,” Pereira said. “He’s aggressive, strong, fast, good with the ball, and for me he has all the attributes to help us. I don’t have any doubts that he will fit my system.

“He’s injured, but every time he’s playing with teammates and giving energy. He goes to the stadium and tries to share his smile with everybody. This is the profile that I like to be in my side.

“The Mosquera that I see every day brings good energy to everybody. Inside the pitch is a player that can add something more to us. Outside of the pitch, he’s a leader with a smile, and I’m very happy for him and for us.”
