Where Cyriel Dessers ranks in elite Rangers list but striker ‘wants more’
Rangers eventually managed to see of Dundee in one of the most bizarre games of the season.
Barry Ferguson was happy with the three points, however, the Rangers manager was far from happy with the performance, and no wonder, the hosts could easily have scored another 2-3 goals and there wouldn’t be any claims of it being unjust.
The interim boss wanted his Rangers squad to dig deep to win games, and they did, given that for the first 75 minutes, there looked like only one winner.
Part of the reason for this was the performance of Cyriel Dessers who seemed destined to play all night and not score.
Dessers had as many shots as passes, but ended up the hero and marked his 100th game for Rangers with a goal, joining an illustrious list of names in the process.
Where Cyriel Dessers ranks in elite Rangers list
The 93rd minute strike saw the 30-year old hit 45 for his two seasons at the club with his assists taking this tally to over 60 goal contributions, Dessers was both hero and villain.
Considering the first three months of last season saw him only score three times as Michael Beale persisted with a formation that didn’t work, it is a more than respectable return.
Also, it has been a far from consistent and successful Rangers team, unlike the teams who the other names on the list played for.
Looking at the 21st century, there was always only going to be one winner at the top of the list, Kris Boyd.
The other three are all title winners too, with Alfredo Morelos not far behind Boyd with Shota Arveladze and Kemar Roofe making up the numbers.
None of the other strikers faced anywhere near the same level of criticism as Dessers, who has a better goal contribution rate (one every 100 minutes) than Kyogo Furuhashi (103 minutes) and Daizen Maeda (125 minutes).
What has Dessers said about 100 game landmark?
Speaking after a bizarre performance that saw Dessers have 12 attempts at goal, the Rangers No.9 was proud of his record:
“Yeah, it goes fast, huh? I haven’t been here for two years and already my 100th game. I think that says a lot about the club, how many games you play, but also about staying fit and being available every game. So, it’s a very nice milestone, especially when you can top it off with a win.
“I leave that to others to talk about, but if you can arrive at a club, at a big club and then in your first two seasons, you can hit 20 plus goals, I think that you’re doing your job,” Dessers replied when asked about what is a solid return of 45 goals.
“Obviously, I want more, I think the fans want more, the gaffer wants more. So, I’m working hard for that every day. We’ve still got some important games left this season, so hopefully I can add a few more.”
