BREAKING: Police make decision on Rangers star Vaclav Cerny’s Celtic Park water spraying
Vaclav Cerny will face no police action over Watergate after the authorities ended their probe and confirmed no criminality had taken place.
The Rangers winger – who could still face SFA punishment – found himself in hot water after soaking Celtic fans with a water bottle as he celebrated Hamza Igamane’s late Old Firm winner.
It sparked fury among the home supporters and Celtic later raised concerns with the authorities over the incident.
Police and security were forced to step in to calm the scene as tempers threatened to boil over and Police Scotland later revealed they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
But a spokesman confirmed to Record Sport on Monday afternoon that – while advice has been given to the club over the incident – no further action would be taken against the Czech international.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received information, enquiries were carried out and no criminality has been established.
“Officers have engaged with the club and advice was given.”
Cerny himself has labelled the probe into the incident as “absurd” while Rangers caretaker Barry Ferguson last week defended his player and said he’d have a problem if his players didn’t celebrate goals.
But Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers slammed the 27-year-old for showing a lack of respect towards the home fans. Speaking on Friday Rodgers said: “I think it’s a lack of respect if a player runs up a touchline and he’s squirting a water bottle in the supporters’ face. I certainly wouldn’t want my players to do it. It works both ways. There’s a lot that comes to players as well from the stands to coaches, managers and players. But I think we all know there’s a line that we shouldn’t cross.”
While the police probe is over Cerny could yet find himself facing sanctions from the SFA. Former ref Steve Conroy reckons Hampden beaks will have to punish the player, claiming they could issue a formal notice of disapproval for breaching rules or regulations.
Conroy told the Ref’s View podcast: “The SFA will have to do something, whatever that is. Do you ban him for a game? Do you censure him? I have no idea. It was pathetic, it was infantile.”
