Derek Ferguson shares which manager is in ‘pole position’ for Rangers job
Barry Ferguson has done well thus far being the interim Rangers manager.
His side have beaten Celtic and made it to the Europa League quarter-finals as they now have a real chance to win silverware this season.
Thus far, no decision has been made on who the permanent manager will be for the 2025-26 campaign.
Derek Ferguson reveals who’s in pole position for the Rangers job
Barry took over the reins once Philippe Clement was sacked and has emerged in the conversation to be the next permanent manager.
Derek is of the opinion that his brother is the one in pole position to be named the next Gers boss in the summer.
He told Open Goal at 1:09:11: “He’s [Barry Ferguson] in pole position, so he’s the one that’s there. He’ll be so motivated for it. I can see a difference in them. It’s clear to see.”
San Francisco 49ers are expected to set a high bar for the next manager
The San Francisco 49ers, poised to complete their takeover by mid-2025, will demand a compelling case from Ferguson to secure the permanent managerial role.
With their meticulous approach – evidenced by the two-month process to appoint Daniel Farke at Leeds- they’ll expect Ferguson to deliver consistent results, not just fleeting highs like the Europa League quarter-final run or the Celtic victory.
Tactical acumen, player development and a clear playing identity that aligns with their vision of sustainable success will be non-negotiable, given their investment in infrastructure and ambition to rival Celtic.
Ferguson’s deep club ties and fan support are assets, but his limited managerial experience at smaller clubs like Clyde and Alloa raises doubts about his readiness for Rangers’ scale.
The 49ers, led by analytical minds like Paraag Marathe and Gretar Steinsson, will likely set a high bar -potentially a Europa League semi-final or significant domestic improvement – to justify bypassing proven names like Rafa Benitez.
Sentimentality won’t sway them, and Ferguson must prove he’s a strategic fit for their long-term, data-driven blueprint.
