Josh Sargent’s stoppage-time strike earned Norwich City a smash and grab 1-0 victory over West Brom at Carrow Road.

Sargent’s superb finish means the Canaries move to 10th in the Championship table, although there are still five points separating them from the play-off places.

Norwich started poorly in the 5-2-3 system Thorup had deployed after its successful showing at Bristol before the international break, but after a few nervy minutes they settled down.

It was the visiting side who had the first real chance, however, Karlan Grant cutting it and seeing Angus Gunn spill his deflected shot just wide of the far post. The resulting corner ended up with Torbjorn Heggem’s stooping header, forcing Gunn into a superb beat clear.

City responded with a double-chance of their own, Sargent somehow firing straight at Joe Wildsmith when Borja Sainz sent him through on goal before Ante Crnac shot wide from the rebound.

Jayson Molumby should have opened the scoring in the 27th minute when John Swift found him in space on the edge of the box from a free-kick, but he comfortably cleared the crossbar with his effort. Grant then had another chance, stinging Gunn’s palms from inside the box.

The same man continued to be a danger the other side of half-time, picking the ball up in space on the edge of the box. The home fans breathed a sigh of relief as his swipe drifted just over, but at the other end there wasn’t much for them to get excited about.

It took nearly 20 minutes for the next half-chance to be created, and even then it feel to Swift. He poked over, summing up the lack of quality that continued thereafter.

Until, that was, the American had his say. He smelt blood when substitute Marcelino Nunez sent him through, galloping forward to chop inside and send his public into raptures.
