‘Big issue’: Nuno Espirito Santo furious at Premier League transfer window announcement

Nuno Espirito Santo has had little to complain about this season at Nottingham Forest, but a Premier League rule has seemingly irritated the Portuguese coach.

It’s been a campaign of proving people wrong for the Forest manager, with the likes of Ashley Cole having doubts about Espirito Santo before the Premier League season began.

Gary Lineker thought Forest would be relegated in a sign of doubt about Espirito Santo’s abilities which looks ridiculous now with the Reds on the brink of Champions League football.

Thankfully, Stuart Pearce called Espirito Santo’s appointment a ‘masterstroke’ which further emphasised the brilliant season he is having, but one Premier League announcement that will impact next season is already upsetting the 51-year-old.

Nuno Espirito Santo enraged by the Premier League transfer window announcement

With Forest already planning to sign a striker in the summer, work is clearly underway to capitalise on the incredible progress made this year. However, plans might need to change as the Premier League has set a rather unique transfer window schedule.

According to Sky Sports, the summer transfer window: “will open early between Sunday June 1 and Tuesday June 10 due to an exceptional registration period for the expanded Club World Cup.

“It will then open again on Monday June 16 until Deadline Day on Monday September 1. […] FIFA approved a proposal in October to give teams participating in the Club World Cup an additional window between June 1 and June 10 so they could sign players ahead of the tournament.”

Reacting to this news in his pre-match press conference, Espirito Santo revealed his concerns about the transfer window go beyond this announcement.

He said: “I think, honestly, the big issue still remains. The window will be open when the competition of the Premier League starts so that battle was not one I believe is better for the competition. The moment that it starts, the window should be closed.”

Nuno Espirito Santo concerned about transfer window ‘distraction’

Forest are looking to sign Ola Aina and Neco Williams to new deals but additions will need to be made to the Forest squad to cope with the pressures of continental football.

However, Espirito Santo will be concerned about the distracting impact of the upcoming window, which will only be complicated by the ten-day opening in June.

The Reds coach said: “Definitely, it will be a distraction. It is not normal but what we really have to focus on is how we are going to recruit as soon as possible so that we can start working better.”

Forest have already laid the groundwork for early summer business as Tyler Bindon will arrive at Forest for pre-season after his loan at Reading expires, but any further signings will have to take into account these unique Premier League rulings.

Therefore, Evangelos Marinakis will need to be sharp to react so that Forest are not left behind if their rivals choose to aggressively capitalise on this early transfer period.
