Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville in fiery disagreement after Ian Wright’s claim on Forest star Gibbs-White
It’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster couple of weeks for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.
First, Gibbs-White was omitted from the England squad – much to the dismay of the Forest fan base.
Then, after Forest fans backed Gibbs-White at Ipswich, Thomas Tuchel called up to the squad when Cole Palmer picked up an injury.
In another twist, Gibbs-White was then left out of the matchday squad for the first World Cup qualifier against Albania, which England won 3-0.
Tuchel praised Gibbs-White for how he’d responded to that setback and subsequently named him in the squad for the game against Latvia.
However, after going 3-0 up in that game too, Tuchel summoned Kyle Walker and Jordan Henderson from the bench ahead of Gibbs-White in a baffling decision.
Now, it’s been a hot topic of discussion among various pundits over whether or not the Forest captain deserved a chance in the last two matches.
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on Morgan Gibbs-White
It’s been non-stop discussions on Gibbs-White from the Forest fan base during this international duty and that’s hardly surprising.
Now, however, some completely impartial pundits have been discussing the situation with Manchester City star Phil Foden in the spotlight for his England performances.
Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Carragher and Neville had a heated discussion, with Neville seeming to dismiss the fact that Gibbs-White couldn’t get a single minute in the two games.
The conversation on this week’s edition of The Overlap went as follows:
Ian Wright: “He’s not done it for England though, Gary, there’s people like Morgan Gibbs-White waiting for an opportunity, Morgan Rogers can play there. I would want to try them at some point because Phil just hasn’t done enough.
Gary Neville: “If we’re going to demean and rubbish Phil Foden as the same level of players that you’ve just mentioned, then I think that’s where we’re going with this.
Jamie Carragher: “No, Gary, that’s wrong, it’s about not picking the best players.
Roy Keane: “He’s not in form, is he Gary?”
Carragher: “It’s absolutely nonsense.
Neville: “It’s that age-old thing for me, where people think players get picked because of who they play for. I know how managers think. Harry Kane he’s going to play for England. Fact. Shearer never scored many leading up to Euro 96, it was never going to be Les (Ferdinand), it was never going to be Robbie (Fowler), it was always going to be Shearer because he’s Shearer. Foden should be that player for me.
Wright: “What?!”
Carragher: “What are you talking about?!! You are talking absolute rubbish.”
Morgan Gibbs-White must use this as a motivation to win England chance
If Gibbs-White had not already played for England, perhaps he’d be assessing his options elsewhere, with the Forest man also eligible for Jamaica.
However, the Forest skipper takes a lot of pride in playing for England as as a result, he will be keen to prove Tuchel wrong over the next few months.
One of the next England games takes place at the City Ground and he will definitely hope to be involved in some capacity at the World Famous.
This is disappointing for Gibbs-White but he will now be completely aware that he’s got a job to focus on with Forest over the coming months.
Playing well in those games will enhance his chances of getting in the squad once more and that is now the challenge facing Gibbs-White.
