‘Heartbroken’: Derby County rookie youngster announces retirement at just 21
Heartbroken Derby County youngster Morten Spencer has announced his retirement from football at the age of just 21.
The midfielder, who joined the Rams just last summer, confirmed the news on his Instagram page and detailed a ‘cardiac problem’ as the reason behind the decision.
Spencer moved to Pride Park to team up with the under-21s squad last July after five years at Leeds United and having also spent time at Sunderland.
Since arriving he has played six Premier League 2 games but none since October. He played 34 times for Leeds U18s and 24 for their U21s. He has also played in the EFL Trophy and for Norway and England at age group level.
Spencer wrote: “Heartbroken to be saying this. I will be retiring from professional football due to a cardiac problem I can’t carry on with.
“All I’ve ever known is to kick a ball and I have learnt everything from the game. I’m thankful and proud of what I have achieved.
“I will never forget the memories I have and have created along an amazing journey. Football is in my DNA and I will continue to support everyone who helped me along the way.
“I want to thank everyone who has stuck with me during this tough period and everyone who has helped me during my career.”
The Rams also added midfielder Freddie Turley last summer and the Irish youngster has played 16 times in PL2, has represented the Republic of Ireland’s U19s and even made the bench for Championship fixtures against QPR, Sunderland and Cardiff.
