Stoke City has appointed Ian Torrance as their new head of recruitment.

He spent the previous year in Italy in a similar job with Serie A team Como and succeeds Lee

Darnbrough, who departed the club in February after only eight months at the bet365 Stadium.

Torrance spent 13 years with Southampton, rising to the position of chief scout before joining Como in

time for the club’s return to Italy’s top flight.

“We know our work in the transfer market will need to be smart, agile and diligent for us to be successful and

we believe Ian is the right person to help us implement that moving forward,” Jon Walters, Stoke’s sporting director,

told reporters. On March 24, 1985, defender Steve Bruce was a member of the Norwich City squad heading to

Wembley Stadium to face Sunderland in the League Cup final. Despite his later career with Manchester United,

this was a memorable moment for Bruce, who had been plucked from the lower divisions by

Norwich after seven years with Gillingham.

Bruce was to know many big occasions in his later career with Manchester United,

but for him, having been plucked from the lower divisions by Norwich after seven years with Gillingham, it was one to savour.
