‘Composure’: National media agrees on Everton star’s 7/10 performance during international service
Jake O’Brien played for the Republic of Ireland in the National League, where they defeated Bulgaria 2-1.
On Sunday evening, Everton defender Jake O’Brien made his complete competitive debut on the international stage,
which he did with pride.
The huge 6ft 6in defender began for the Republic of Ireland against Bulgaria in the second leg of the
Nations League play-off in Dublin. The Boys in Green had a 2-1 aggregate lead following their triumph
in Plovdiv last week. And Heimir Hallgrimsson’s team delivered on the Emerald Isle with another
2-1 victory to ensure their spot in Nations League B for the following season. O’Brien was rewarded
with his first competitive start, which demonstrates his growth in recent weeks.
The 23-year-old joined Everton from Lyon last summer, but was limited to a minor role under
former boss Sean Dyche. However, since David Moyes arrived for his second spell as manager
at Goodison Park in January, O’Brien has benefited and has started every game.
O’Brien has been employed as a right-back, assisting the Toffees in extending their
Premier League unbeaten streak to nine games and moving away from the relegation zone.
In that time, he scored two crucial equalizers in 1-1 draws against Brentford and
West Ham United before the international break.
