Stefan Borson suggests Rangers punishment after Ibrox controversy as the 49ers Enterprises-backed takeover progresses
Rangers fans are currently on a high after recording a stunning victory over Celtic and reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Barry Ferguson’s side headed into the Old Firm derby on 16 March 16 points behind their fierce rivals in the Scottish Premiership table, but a late Hamza Igamane strike secured a 3-2 victory for his side at Celtic Park.
That came just days after the Ibrox club beat Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on penalties to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Rangers will now face Athletic Bilbao next month for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
However, the Glasgow giants have been charged by Uefa after a handful of supporters displayed what it described as a “racist and/or discriminatory banner” against Fenerbahce.
Rangers said it is “deeply saddening and frankly embarrassing that the club is now set to face significant sanctions for the actions of a very small minority”.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t believe the charge will have any impact on the takeover at Ibrox.
The 49ers Enterprises-backed takeover appears to be progressing following widespread reports claiming a deal has now been agreed in principle.
The US consortium, which includes Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, is looking to secure a majority takeover and wants control of the Ibrox boardroom by buying at least 51 per cent of the club’s shares.
Rangers could land ‘amazing’ financial boost after stunning twist
Borson insisted the Uefa fine is likely to be low and won’t move the dial for Rangers.
He told Football Insider: “The fines are generally quite low for this sort of stuff and they’re quite common.
“People get charged, so I think they’re just going to have to take it. It’s a pretty well-trodden path.
“I don’t think it’s going to move the dial particularly. I don’t think they should be overly concerned about it.
“This is a good season for them in terms of what’s happening in Europe. If they can somehow win it, that would be an amazing situation for them given that Champions League revenue.
“In terms of impacting the takeover, I think these things can do if it’s directed at something that’s relevant to that potential buyer.
“I suspect in this case it’s not something that will overly concern them.”
Everton could move to sign Rangers star Hamza Igamane
Football Insider revealed on 14 March Everton could sign Rangers star Igamane in the summer transfer window.
Everton are expected to face stiff competition as European outfits Marseille and Sevilla are also keeping tabs on the forward’s progress.
Igamane has registered 14 goals this season, including the winner in the recent clash against Celtic.
