Tottenham Hotspur could be eyeing a new defender in the summer window.

Spurs have Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Radu Dragusin as three major centre-backs, while Ben Davies can play there as well. If you add the versatile Archie Gray, you have enough depth in the defensive areas.

The reality is something else. In the previous two seasons (including this one), both Van de Ven and Romero missed a chunk of games due to injuries. This season, at one point, Ange Postecoglou had no other options but to start with Dragusin and Gray at a stretch.

This has hampered the results. It indicates Spurs need more depth in their defensive areas, and probably that’s why they are checking on new centre-backs.

Tottenham Hotspur look to sign Matte Smets

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (page 71), Spurs are looking to sign Genk centre-back Matte Smets in the summer window.

The 21-year-old is regarded as the “next elite defender”, as he has already earned one national cap.

Two great Belgium defenders – Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen – played a long period for Spurs. Could Smets follow the trail at the north London club?

Smets is a tough, ball-playing defender who is confident and assured in his position. It will require a fee of around £8.5m to sign Smets, and Daniel Levy should look to sign him.

Big summer ahead

Levy has shown incredible patience towards Postecoglou, but if the results do not improve now, the Spurs boss might get the sack. He now has almost the fully fit squad available, and fans want to see an improvement in results.

Spurs need to maintain some sort of consistency in the Premier League if they want to get into the top ten, but it looks difficult at the moment.

They can still end the season on a high by winning the Europa League.

At the same time, it is hard to predict how Tottenham would approach the summer window after a disappointing campaign.

Spurs will probably look to invest heavily in young talents rather than proven stars who could cost a huge amount of money, and that’s why investing in Smets makes sense.
