Coventry City handed ‘fascinating’ warning over the future of Frank Lampard as ‘a number of clubs’ keep watch

Frank Lampard is breaking records at Coventry City and has the Sky Blues on course for the play-offs, but we can exclusively reveal he is also catching the attention of other clubs in the Football League in the process.Just a few months ago, most Coventry City fans were highly sceptical when it was announced that Frank Lampard was replacing long-standing manager Mark Robins at the CBS Arena.

The former Derby County, Chelsea, and Everton man took over with Coventry looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone. Now, they’re the most in-form team in the division, and bona fide play-off contenders as we head into the business end of the season.

But, this success may come at a cost. In an EFL Analysis exclusive, we can offer the inside scoop on Lampard’s future and how his good work could lead to a premature exit.

Frank Lampard could be a managerial target in the summer

We spoke to TBR Football’s Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey about what the future holds for Lampard and it seems Coventry’s record-breaking run of form has led to envious glances from outside the club ahead of the summer.

Bailey said: “This is fascinating. Despite only being at Coventry a short amount of time, I am told that Lampard is on the list of a number of clubs going into the summer. Lampard, I would say for sure, is one to keep an eye on, maybe especially from the relegated clubs coming down to the Championship.”

We largely expect Southampton, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town to return to the second tier in the summer. We also know it is very likely that Southampton for one will be seeking a new manager.

Whether Lampard would actually jump ship so soon remains to be seen, but one thing we can be certain of is that he will have offers on the table.

Promotion could be the only way to stop repeat of Frank Lampard’s Derby County exit

Coventry’s final run-in of eight games will determine whether they secure a play-off berth or not, but given their current form, it does look likely.

Once there, there’s every chance the Sky Blues will go all the way thanks to that momentum they’ve generated of late, and it would be an incredible story if they do get promoted.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
3 Burnley 38 21 15 2 52 11 41 78
4 Sunderland 38 19 12 7 55 37 18 69
5 Coventry 38 17 8 13 55 48 7 59
6 West Brom 38 13 18 7 48 34 14 57
7 Bristol City 38 14 15 9 49 41 8 57

Lampard has previous in the play-offs, of course. He led Derby to the final in 2019 after defeating Leeds United in the semi-finals, but lost out to Aston Villa at the final hurdle.

The progress he made with the Rams was enough to entice Chelsea into offering Lampard the top job at Stamford Bridge, though, and Lampard duly accepted. He left quite the mess behind at Derby, too.

Coventry fans will surely be looking at that situation and fearing the worst. You’d think that, if the Sky Blues go up, Lampard would be staying put. But failure in the play-offs could be just the right level of relative success to encourage offers from elsewhere.
