Bayer Leverkusen has accepted Tottenham’s bid to sign Bundesliga winner labelled as “one of the world’s best” Jonathan Tah
Tottenham Hotspur are actively working to reinforce their defensive options ahead of the summer transfer window, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah emerging as a prime candidate.
The German international is set to become a free agent when his contract expires in June, making him one of the most sought-after defensive options in Europe.
Tottenham make approach to sign Jonathan Tah
According to CaughtOffside, Spurs have already made enquiries regarding Tah’s availability as they assess a potential move. However, they are not alone in the race, as Premier League leaders Liverpool have also expressed strong interest in securing his signature.
Tottenham’s need for defensive reinforcements has become increasingly urgent in recent months. Vice-captain Cristian Romero remains on Real Madrid’s radar while promising young centre-back Radu Dragusin has also been linked with a potential departure.
As a result, the North London club is exploring reliable options to solidify their backline.
Tah has been an instrumental part of Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side, playing a crucial role in their Bundesliga-winning campaign. His defensive prowess, composure on the ball, and leadership qualities earned him a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
Xabi Alonso has heaped praise on the defender, labelling him as one of the world’s best in his position. He said:
“Overall, Jonathan Tah is performing at the highest level and I am really happy for him because he deserves all the praise and all the good moments he’s living – that he keeps playing for us and happily for the national team as well. I think he is one of the world’s best defenders.”
Since joining Leverkusen in 2015 for €7.5 million, Tah has established himself as one of Germany’s most consistent defenders. Despite signing a contract extension in 2021, he announced last September that he would not be renewing his deal, paving the way for a move this summer.
While Spurs and Liverpool are both pushing for his signature, Barcelona are currently leading the race, seeing him as a vital addition to their defensive setup.
Signing Tah on a free transfer would be a smart move for Tottenham, providing them with an experienced, high-quality defender without a transfer fee.
With several top clubs vying for his services, the coming weeks will be decisive as Spurs intensify their efforts to bring the German defender to North London.
