Wolves star Matheus Cunha has made one clear promise to Dorival Junior after Brazil call-u
Wolves striker Matheus Cunha has been selected by the Brazil national team for their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.
While Cunha suffered suspension for Wolves after a straight red card against Bournemouth in the FA Cup, the 25-year-old warrants selection for the national side after a stellar season.
The former Atletico Madrid star has plundered 15 goals in all competitions, including 13 in the Premier League, single-handedly dragging his side towards safety.
Cunha once idolised Brazilian icon Neymar, and the striker hopes to make his first international appearance since their 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in October 2024.
Indeed, there is a chance he could play alongside Wolves teammate Andre, who has also been called up for the upcoming qualifiers, with Cunha now making a promise to his manager.
Matheus Cunha has promised to deliver for Brazil
The Brazil forward line is saturated with some incredible talent such as Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr and Rodrigo.
But whilst competition for places is huge, Cunha promises not to crumble under the weight of expectation and wants to repay Dorival Junior by living up to expectations.
Speaking to Infobae, Cunha said: “I was proud of his words. Being praised by the coach makes you happier and more confident. I’m going to try to live up to all those expectations and praise on the field while wearing the national team jersey.
“I’m happy to be returning to the national team at a time when I’m showing great happiness and playing very well for my club.”
Despite never scoring in 11 appearances for his nation, Vitor Pereira’s talisman is more hungry than ever to prove he belongs at the top level of international football.
Cunha won’t face Argentina’s Lionel Messi after injury
Ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Lionel Messi has suffered a ‘low grade’ muscle injury, which means the Ballon d’Or winning magician will miss clashes against Uruguay and Brazil.
The 37-year-old picked up the injury during Miami’s Major League Soccer (MLS) 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Sunday.
Cunha would have relished coming against arguably the greatest footballer of all-time but instead, he has a point to prove himself.
The Wolves striker will be eager to score his first Brazil goal during the international break, and there would be no better way to do it than against arch-rivals Argentina.
