Don Kitchenbrand, 91, a former Sunderland and Rangers player, has died.

Kichenbrand was born on August 13, 1933, and earned his name in British football in the 1950s,

playing for Rangers and Sunderland. Kitchenbrand, fondly known as The Rhino among Rangers supporters,

was a trendsetter in many ways. At a time when an unwritten rule barred Catholic players from joining Rangers,

Kitchenbrand bucked the odds by discreetly putting his faith aside to pursue his football career.

Kichenbrand made an immediate impression in his first season with Rangers (1955-56), scoring 24 goals in 25

league appearances to help the side win the Scottish League title. His contributions included a famous winning goal

against Old Firm rivals Celtic in January 1956, as well as an impressive five-goal display against Queen of the

South at Ibrox in March 1956.Though his time with the Rangers was brief owing to Max Murray’s ascension,

Kitchenbrand’s reputation endured. He eventually moved to Sunderland in March 1958, where he continued

to showcase his talent and enthusiasm for the game. After leaving Rangers, Kichenbrand went on to play 54

competitive games and score 28 goals for Sunderland. Sunderland’s first hat-trick in two years came in November 1958,

when he scored three goals in a 4-0 victory over Rotherham United.
