Tottenham tipped to rip up Son Heung-min’s captaincy and contract after Fulham footage emerges

From club legend to a much-maligned captain. Frustrated Tottenham fans have appeared to turn on captain Son Heung-min following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Fulham, which left them 14th in the table and staring down the barrel of the club’s worst-ever Premier League season.

Manager Ange Postecoglou controversially made seven changes from the team that beat AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday, with the South Korean forward one star to drop to the bench. He came on at half-time for Brennan Johnson but was ineffective as Spurs succumbed to two late goals at Craven Cottage. However, it was the post-match reaction of the 32-year-old that riled away supporters.

Footage posted online by the @THFCReports account shows Son seemingly looking devastated as he exchanges words with teammate Mathys Tel. He also puts his shirt over his head, and although the video was later deleted, fans still had time to make their feelings known.

“Terminate his contract, loser of a captain,” wrote @SHAMITTHFC. “Same reaction every single game we lose. So much for captain material,” added @jay_b_91.

Calls for the club to rip up Son’s contract signify a new perception from club followers, with the player previously revered in north London. Since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, he has 173 goals in 448 games.

And @34848449a argued there was still a place for Son at Spurs, but without the armband, writing: “Guy needs to lose his captaincy somehow to not ruin his reputation, we’ve already seen what happened to Lloris. One of the best wingers we ever had but also one of our worst captains.”

In January, Son signed an extension to his current deal at Tottenham, which runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. He’s made 40 appearances in all competitions this campaign, scoring 11 times.

At the start of the season, he admitted he needed to win a trophy in England to cement his club legacy, saying: “I still don’t think I am a legend of this club. I have said I want to win something with Spurs, then I want to be very happy to be called legend.”
