Rangers star subject of Police Scotland probe after controversial Celtic incident
Rangers star Vaclav Cerny is being investigated by Police Scotland after allegedly spraying a water bottle at Celtic fans during his side’s 3-2 win on Sunday.
Police Scotland have launched an investigation following allegations that Rangers striker Vaclav Cerny sprayed water at Celtic fans during the heated aftermath of the Gers’ triumph over their arch-rivals. The incident occurred in the dying moments of the game, shortly after Hamza Igamane netted the decisive goal for Rangers. Cerny was seen celebrating with Igamane after the crucial strike. Despite a valiant comeback from Celtic, who managed to level the score at 2-2 thanks to Reo Hatate’s effort 15 minutes before the end, it was Rangers who had the final say in the contest.
The Czech striker, currently on loan from Wolfsburg and boasting 17 goals this season, found himself at the centre of controversy not for his performance on the pitch but for his conduct towards the Celtic supporters. Celtic released a statement on Monday expressing concerns about the policing of the match and the behaviour of certain individuals: “Celtic Football Club has received complaints regarding the policing operation concerning yesterday’s match, specifically events away from Celtic Park. We are reviewing our supporters’ concerns and will be looking into these issues.”
The Hoops added: “It is important that these matters are addressed and the Club will be engaging in discussions with supporters and Police Scotland to understand the circumstances and events. With regards to the match at Celtic Park, we can also confirm that the Club has raised concerns regarding members of the away team engaging with Celtic supporters with the relevant authorities.”
Following up on the matter, Police Scotland confirmed to Sky Sports that they are actively investigating the situation. “Officers received information and enquiries are ongoing,” said the police spokesperson.
Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande’s strikes put Rangers ahead at Celtic Park, but Daizen Maeda and Hatate drew Celtic level, only for Igamane to slot home a dramatic winner. Despite the loss, Celtic continue to maintain a 13-point lead over their Glasgow rivals.
Rangers aren’t out of the contention for trophies on the European stage, having triumphed over Fenerbahce in a nail-biting penalty shootout in the Europa League round of 16. Next up, they will clash with Athletic Club in the quarter-finals, a match that defender Dujon Sterling is determined to use as a springboard following a remarkable week.
“It was a big one, especially after this week and the Fenerbahce game as well,” shared Sterling with the club’s media team. “It is the first time since I have been here that we have come and beat them, so it is a great feeling and we had the fans back as well to give us that extra boost.
“We watched them, and we thought let’s try something different, we were more aggressive, and they didn’t like that and we went two goals up. I think you could see the legs were getting tired doing 120 minutes during the week, but we dug deep, let the subs come on and do their thing and then Hamza got the winner with a great goal.”
