Leeds United needed Willy Gnonto to carve out a chance straight away off the bench against QPR, and it was a summary of the fans’ frustrations that a player of his talent hasn’t been in the starting lineup for months.
The Whites remain top of the league going into the international break, but have given themselves a much more nervy run-in than it looked coming out of February.
Their lead has gone from eight points over third place to just two, with only goal difference separating Leeds and Sheffield United in the top two.
Willy Gnonto gets Man of the Match v QPR for sub showing
It looked like history repeating itself for Leeds as they found themselves 2-0 down in the first half at Loftus Road on Saturday, but it’s a testament to this Leeds side’s character that they were able to rally once more to earn a draw.
A Morgan Fox own goal halved the deficit before half timer before Leeds got back on level terms six minutes into the second half, when Dan James’ cut-back to Manor Solomon brought a shot saved into the path of the onrushing Jayden Bogle, who made no mistake.
The man orchestrating everything in the second half was Willy Gnonto, coming off the bench for Brenden Aaronson after the American’s error led to the R’s opener, and Gnonto’s wionderful pass was the one that released James before 2-2.
His overall showing off the bench earned him the club’s Man of the Match award, getting an impressive 40% of the vote:
40% of the Leeds fanbase have just told Farke what needs to happen with Gnonto
Farke has stressed multiple times why he has often opted for his current starting three behind the striker over the likes of Gnonto and Largie Ramazani who sit on the bench.
His main reasoning is down to the pressing capabilities of Aaronson over either of his sub options, but the worrying lack of attacking quality that he’s shown in the last three months makes for grim reading, and the Leeds fans have essentially told Farke what needs to happen going forward here.
With Swansea City at home after the international break, Leeds will be on the front foot and looking to break down another bottom-half side at Elland Road, meaning a creative spark in the ’10’ is needed – that man being Gnonto.
Gnonto was the best player on the pitch when he came on, and it’s a sorry state of affairs to see how he’s been badly utilised this season, and that now has to change with the stark contrast in Leeds’ performances in either half.
