Mount’s loan from Derby County served as a catalyst for Chelsea’s success.

For Chelsea supporters, Mason Mount is kind of a taboo issue. In 2023, the once-loved academy graduate left Manchester United on poor terms.

Mount was the happiest place on earth little under four years ago. He was a mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s England team, had recently won the Champions League trophy with his boyhood club, and had been awarded Chelsea Player of the Year. For the young midfielder, it truly appeared like the possibilities were endless.

But for the popular favorite, things would start to go wrong. His 2022–2023 minutes were limited by injury, and his performances drastically declined. After 18 years with the team, Mount finally made the decision to leave Stamford Bridge as a result of this. For £55 million, Manchester United jumped at the chance to sign the Englishman.

Due to injuries, Mount has been unable to continue in Manchester, making this move a complete failure. Given that the Rams provided the midfielder with a platform to establish himself as a Blues star prior to the move, Chelsea will undoubtedly be appreciative of Derby County’s financial windfall.

Derby was always viewed as a contender for promotion to the Premier League prior to Mel Morris’ disastrous spell as Rams owner, and 2018–19 was no different. The then-teenager joined Blues great Frank Lampard at Pride Park following his first senior loan to Vitesse.

The stepping stone that would propel Mount to Chelsea stardom would turn out to be this loan agreement. The midfielder, who scored eight goals in 35 league games despite missing two months due to injury, was a major contributor to County’s success that season. The Rams made it to the play-offs where they would meet Leeds United over two legs.
