Nottingham Forest were given the demand after they lost an appeal to an FA case surrounding controversial social media posts made last season
A social media post that went viral and criticized Nottingham Forest’s decisions after the team’s loss to Everton last season has been ordered to be taken down. In April of last year, Forest lost a pivotal relegation matchup between two teams who had been docked points for violating Premier League spending regulations, and their penalty appeals were dismissed. Forest’s official account on X, formerly Twitter, criticized the penalty calls minutes after the final whistle blew and mentioned that the Video Assistant Referee had been Stuart Attwell, a fan of Luton Town, another team in the relegation fight.
Comments released online, and viewed millions of times, included: “Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept. We warned the PGMOL [the referees’ organisation] that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.”
“Three incredibly bad decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept,” was one of the comments posted online and read millions of times. Before the game, we informed the referees’ organization, PGMOL, that the VAR supports Luton, but they chose not to replace him. Several times, our patience has been put to the test. Now, NFFC will weigh its alternatives.
In professional football, it is especially serious, especially when it comes to choices made in a pivotal match that might decide things like promotion or relegation to or from the Premier League, where the stakes are quite high.
