Unai Emery was interested in a £60 million England international who was linked to Aston Villa.
Adam Wharton, a midfielder for Crystal Palace, has reportedly drawn interest from
Aston Villa ahead of the summer transfer season. Before relocating to Selhurst Park a little
more than a year ago, Wharton rose through the ranks at his boyhood club, Blackburn Rovers,
and has adapted to life in the Premier League with ease.
In fact, he was so good that Gareth Southgate called him up for the Euros last summer.
However, injury problems have marred his Eagles campaign this season,
preventing him from playing in the Premier League trip to Villa Park.
Wharton’s only Premier League start came in the 4-1 thumping of Villa in the capital,
and he excelled in midfield in front of the new England manager Thomas Tuchel.
That issue was actually picked up in the first half of Palace’s EFL
Cup victory over the Lions back in October. Wharton didn’t return until February.
It’s also possible that he caught Unai Emery’s attention that night, and according to certain sources,
the Lions are considering bringing Wharton in during the summer transfer window.
GMS goes on to say that Palace values Wharton at over £60 million,
which is three times the amount they paid for him during the 2024 winter transfer window.
This alone shows how quickly he has advanced to become a major player on the international scene.
Villa is obviously not the only team interested in Wharton; when the topic of his future has come up,
he has been linked to Newcastle United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Real Madrid.
Blackburn is also reportedly waiting to see how things work out because they have a sell-on clause.
