‘Transformed their season’ – Coventry City vs Stoke City prediction
Coventry City host Stoke City in the Championship this weekend as Mark Robins makes his first return to the CBS Arena since his sacking.
Coventry City have embarked on a remarkable rise since swapping Mark Robins for Frank Lampard.
The former Chelsea and Everton boss has overseen a surge from the lower reaches of the Championship all the way up to the play-offs. The Sky Blues are now all the way up in 5th in the Championship table, though a host of sides remain in hot pursuit of the top six spots.
Under Lampard, Coventry City have now won eight of their last nine Championship games.
As for Stoke City, their change in management has not brought such fortune. Ex-Sky Blues boss Robins is their third manager of the season but they’re yet to put meaningful distance between themselves and the bottom three.
The Potters played out a goalless draw at home to Watford at the weekend, leaving them five points clear of the drop in 20th.
12 games since Robins’ appointment has brought three wins, for draws and five losses for SCFC.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“It’s safe to say Coventry City’s decision to part ways with Robins and bring in Lampard has aged brilliantly. Credit to the Sky Blues, as they had their critics upon making that call, but it has absolutely transformed their season.
“It hasn’t come together for Robins at Stoke City yet but it’s clear the problems are beyond on-pitch matters with the Potters. They need to completely reassess their approach and structure if they’re to progress going forward.
“Robins will be returning to Coventry hoping to come back to haunt them but on current trajectory, it’s very hard to see anything but a fairly straightforward home win. I’ll say the hosts emerge 2-0 victors.“
Prediction: Coventry City 2-0 Stoke City
Harry Mail
“Coventry City have been in fine form over recent times. Frank Lampard has done an impressive job since taking over from Mark Robins.
“The Sky Blues have risen into the play-offs and will be full of confidence. They have a chance to keep their momentum going against Stoke City by getting another win.
“SCFC are still in a relegation battle and haven’t been able to pull away from the drop zone. The Potters lack quality and will just want this season to end so they can bring in some new players this summer.
“It is hard to see past a home win in this one. The hosts are on a roll and will want to keep their run going.”
