BREAKING: Matheus Cunha is charged by the FA following violent implosion against Bournemouth – and could face an extended ban for second red card of the season

Wolves star Matheus Cunha has been charged by the FA following a dramatic incident involving Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez that saw him punch, kick and headbutt the defender.

Cunha, who had scored earlier in the game, was dismissed with a straight red card – his second of the season for violent conduct – and didn’t appear to want to go down the tunnel following the incident.

The forward was sent off towards the end of extra-time and there was further misery to follow as his side ended up losing 5-4 on penalties and being knocked out of the FA Cup.

Cunha took to Instagram to apologise to his team-mates on Saturday evening, writing: ‘In the end another game where you did your best. I couldn’t lose my head at the end. Sorry’.

Evanilson had put Bournemouth ahead in the 30th minute before Cunha equalised on the hour mark. His celebrations, though, were short-lived as he saw red in more waus than one later in the game.

The FA have now confirmed he has been charged for his actions following the red card, taking to social media to announce the news.

The official X account of an FA Spokesperson wrote: ‘Matheus Cunha has been charged following the FA Cup tie between Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, 1 March.

‘It’s alleged that the forward acted in an improper manner around the 121st minute of the fixture after his dismissal. Matheus Cunha has until Monday, 10 March, to provide a response.’

Cunha appeared to remonstrate with manager Vitor Pereira and push team-mate Daniel Bentley as he was ushered towards the changing room.

He is currently serving a three-match ban for the incident, and will miss games against Everton, Southampton and West Ham.

He does, though, face a potential extended ban having been banned for two matches earlier this season after clashing with a member of staff at Ipswich.

Paul Merson, reporting on the game for Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, described Cunha’s actions on Saturday, saying: ‘Cunha’s been sent off for a full house. He gets called offside, he goes to try and get the ball back off him.

‘They’re all round him, so he punches Kerkez, he goes down, kicks him, he gets up and then he headbutts him. Full house, whole lot.

‘The ref goes and gives him a red card, he cannot believe it. A little kick and then he gets up and it’s a headbutt. He’s arguing with the third linesman as well.’

Former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson was heavily critical of Cunha, adding: ‘Is he stupid? We talk about how talented he is, doing that, that is ridiculous.’

Cunha has scored 13 times for Wolves in the Premier League this season as well as finding the net on two occasions in the FA Cup.

Luis Sinisterra scored the decisive penalty for Bournemouth, who made it through to the quarter-finals.

Boubacar Traore and Matt Doherty had both missed from the spot for Wolves.
