Wayne Rooney tells Ruben Amorim to be ‘selfish’ after what he heard following Man United vs Fulham

Ruben Amorim outlined his long-term plan as Manchester United head coach following the FA Cup defeat to Fulham.

The Europa League is now Ruben Amorim’s last hope of winning silverware this season after Fulham dumped Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

Bruno Fernandes was excellent again and drew United level after Fulham took the lead from a corner. However, tied at 1-1, it required extra time and penalties for the game to be decided.

There were bright sparks from United’s performance such as Chido Obi impressing off the bench, but ultimately it was another disappointing afternoon for the Red Devils.

Amorim now has just three days to prepare his depleted United squad to go again against Real Sociedad on Thursday afternoon. That is his short-term target, his long-term target is far more ambitious.

Wayne Rooney sends message to Ruben Amorim

Despite the controversial decisions made this season, Amorim believes in Ineos and their long-term vision.

Ineos want to win the Premier League by 2028 – United’s 150th anniversary as a club. They will want Amorim to be the man to lead that title charge.

After the Fulham defeat, Amorim admitted his aim is to win the Premier League at United – a target Wayne Rooney called “naive”.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney said: “I think he’ll get time. It’s not a free hit because he’ll expect more from Manchester United than what we’re seeing since he’s been in.

“It’s very difficult to come in during the season and have no pre-season, but he has to look to the future and moving forward. He says winning the Premier League, how can they compete? To get further up the table, I think that’s the next step for them.

“Managers aren’t getting that time over the last 10/15 years. You have to be selfish as a manager and say ‘okay, if I don’t do it now I might not get that time.’”

Ruben Amorim must earn time at Man United

In response to the above comments, Amorim told Rooney he is not naive about his aims at United. He knows it will take time, and he also knows he must earn that time by achieving short-term results.

Amorim has asked for patience as he tries to solve the mess at Old Trafford. There is no short-term fix, so United fans and owners must get behind Amorim.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Amorim has warned his squad that changes will be made out of necessity after a hugely disappointing season.

Only then, once Amorim has a squad he can call his own, should he be judged on results. As for targeting a Premier League title, Amorim knows that is where the club belongs and he should be supported in his journey getting there.
