Potential shred of good news for Wolves as Matheus Cunha awaits FA punishment
Wolves fans couldn’t believe their eyes as Matheus Cunha was sent off against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Wolves are out of the FA Cup after losing on penalties at the Vitality Stadium.
The game went to a shootout after it had finished 1-1 after normal time, with Matt Doherty and Boubacar Traore both missing for the visitors.
Just before the shootout though, Matheus Cunha scrapped with Milos Kerkez and his antics earned him a red card.
It is disastrous for Wolves, with the Brazilian now facing a ban.
Of course, fans will remember that Cunha got banned for two games earlier this season after removing the glasses of a staff member from Ipswich Town following a defeat at Molineux.
Cunha wrote a letter to the FA apologising, which is why the ban was two games and not three. Cunha being a first-time offender also played a part in the reduced length of ban.
Some have been worried about Cunha – who apologised on Instagram last night – being banned for longer than three games as a result of his latest antics – and now there is an update on the situation.
Why Matheus Cunha may only get three-game ban after his red card vs Bournemouth
As it was a straight red card from the referee, Cunha is looking at a three-game ban for Wolves.
Those games are Everton at home, Southampton away and then West Ham United at home.
Some have been fretting that because Cunha received a ban earlier this season from the FA for a misconduct charge, he will perhaps miss more than three games.
But the Express & Star have reported this afternoon that it is not thought that Cunha’s previous ban will be a factor for the FA in this particular investigation.
That is because Cunha didn’t actually get sent off after the Ipswich game, unlike Rayan Ait-Nouri. He was hit with a retrospective ban.
Cunha’s punishment will ultimately depend on referee Sam Barrott’s match report.
So it’s potentially a lifeline, but fans will still be sweating on the outcome of the investigation.

Pereira did not criticise Cunha after what he did, but the Portuguese must be tearing his hair out behind the scenes.
It was absolutely foolish from Cunha, who let his teammates down with his actions. Wolves fans aren’t happy with Cunha for posting about his goal on social media either.
We’ve all seen how important Cunha is and the fact he won’t be available now for at least the next three games is a disaster for Wolves.
Wolves still have a five-point gap down to the relegation zone and have plenty of players capable of stepping up.
But there is just a psychological blow of losing Cunha, which may be something the players think about, especially in any losing situations in these coming games.
If that gap gets cut in the next round of fixtures, then the Wolves players may really start to feel the pressure knowing Cunha is unavailable.
